Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol, Russian writer, was first published in 1842, and is one of the most prominent works of 19th-century Russian literature. Gogol himself saw it as an “epic poem in prose”, and within the book as a “novel in verse”. Despite supposedly completing the trilogy’s second part, Gogol destroyed it shortly before his death.

Not putting a spoiler warning on the 160-year-old novel, especially since it's not about plot twists; its beauty is in the journey, not the destination. She's fine for someone with a simple writing style, like Tolstoy, but not for someone like Gogol. EDIT: Out of curiousity, I googled "best translation dead souls" (without the quotation marks) and discovered that a lot of people are considered the book's best translator.

The first sections were published in 1842.
